Well, Doc Ford is interested in these possibilities, but also interested in checking out the four international gangsters who will be attending. Kazlov, the Russia entrepreneur who claims to have genetically engineered this sturgeon, Armainie, Kozlov’s Iranian competitor, Lien Hai Bohiai, the leading Chinese exporter of farm raised caviar, and Darius Talas from Turkmenia.
With the help of Tomlinson (who is now a restaurateur), Doc garnishes an invitation to this lavish private affair. But, members of the Third Planet Peace Force decide to crash the event with murderous intent.

When the lights go out and Electronic jammers make communication with the outside world impossible, member of the Third Planet Peace Force take over the island. Bent on “punishing man for our sins against nature”, these crazy environmentalists go a bit over the top in their attempt to make a statement. Unsure who is responsible for what, it is up to Doc Ford to try to stave the blood flow and race against the clock to track down the “Bomb” that is suppose to go off at Midnight.

The entire book takes place in a span of less than 24 hours. but a fast paced 24 hours it is.

Some of you Floridians may remember Pat Franks book, Alas Babylon.   It was written in the late 1950′s, at a time when the threat of nuclear war was very real.   Set in central Florida after a nuclear holocaust this book was a “what if” scenario.  Of course, survivors are few and the challenges are great.   If you haven’t read it you need to, then read “One Second After”.

Today’s new threat is Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), which occurs when a nuclear blast is set off over the atmosphere.   It is not  fatal, but it destroys everything electronic.  Planes fall out of the sky, cars don’t run, all forms of communication is down, everything that depends on electricity is non functional.

Set is a small town called Black Mountain in North Carolina, Forstchen’s book “One Second After”, is a hypothesis of what could occur should this happen to us.  Black Mountain is about 11 miles from Ashville, just off highway 40.  When the EPM occurs the highway is clogged with cars that have all come to a stand still.  Wherever you were at that moment is where you will stay unless you feel like a good long walk.  Luckily Black Mountain is downhill from the reservoir, but that is pretty much where their luck ends.   Hoping, but not knowing if the government is even functioning, survival will depend on their ingenuity.  But even that will not make the difference for anyone dependent on medication, dialysis, or a pacemaker.

Not only is this book an intriguing thriller, but also a lesson on dependency.   Just imagine how life would be if you were forced to go months, maybe even years without anything with an electronic component.
